Birthstone Colors, Not Birthstones: How to Wear Your Month's Color in Handmade Czech Glass Jewelry

Your birthstone doesn't have to be a gemstone. If you love the color of your birth month — the deep red of January, the violet of February, the green of May — handmade Czech glass beads give you that color in a well-made piece, without the gemstone price tag or the "is it real?" anxiety. This guide maps each month's birthstone color to real, purchasable CSOMALL pieces.

Here's the honest framing: CSOMALL makes handmade jewelry with Czech glass beads — the glassmakers in the Jablonec region have been producing these for generations. We're not selling gemstones, and this isn't a "birthstone jewelry" guide in the traditional sense. It's a birthstone color guide: how to wear your month's color in a crafted, affordable piece.

Why color-first makes sense

The traditional birthstone list was compiled for fine jewelry — diamonds, rubies, sapphires. But most of us aren't shopping for a $2,000 sapphire. We're looking for something that feels personal, that nods to our month without requiring a gemologist's budget.

Czech glass beads solve this elegantly. They come in rich, saturated colors — garnet red, amethyst purple, emerald green, pearl white — with a depth and light-play that dyed plastic can never match. You're wearing the color story of your birthstone, in a handmade piece, at a fraction of the cost.

The 12-month color map

Below is each month, its traditional birthstone, the color to look for, and a real CSOMALL piece in that color family. Where we don't currently have a match, we say so honestly — no filler.

January — Garnet (deep red)

Garnet's wine-red is one of the most wearable birthstone colors — it works with black, navy, cream, and denim. Look for our handmade raspberry earrings in red Czech glass beads, a rich berry red that captures garnet's depth.

February — Amethyst (violet purple)

Amethyst purple is having a moment, and it's the easiest birthstone color to wear daily — it flatters most skin tones. Our purple Czech glass grape cluster earrings ($32.99) are hand-assembled from translucent purple Czech glass beads, arranged in a dimensional grape cluster. It's the color of February, in a playful, gift-ready piece.

March — Aquamarine (pale blue)

Aquamarine's sea-glass blue is delicate and hard to match in our current collection. We don't have a pale blue piece right now — check back, or consider April's clear/white as a nearby alternative.

April — Diamond (clear / white)

Diamond's "color" is brilliance itself — clear, light-catching, versatile. Our fairy wing earrings in transparent Czech glass capture that light-play without pretending to be diamonds.

May — Emerald (rich green)

Emerald green is bold, botanical, and unmistakable. Our green grape earrings in Czech glass beads deliver that saturated green in a fruit-inspired cluster — a conversation starter.

June — Pearl (luminous white)

June is the pearl month, and this is where we can offer the real thing. Our freshwater pearl pendant necklace features genuine freshwater pearls — not glass, not imitation. For June birthdays, this is the honest choice.

July — Ruby (vivid red)

Ruby red is bolder than January's garnet — think brighter, more electric. The same red Czech glass berry earrings work here too; red is red, and the color story matters more than the stone name.

August — Peridot (yellow-green)

Peridot's lime-olive green is distinctive. Our green grape cluster earrings lean more emerald than peridot, but in the green family they'll read correctly.

September — Sapphire (deep blue)

True sapphire blue is deep and saturated. We don't currently have a deep blue piece — our blue tones run lighter. We're noting this honestly rather than forcing a match.

October — Opal / Pink Tourmaline (iridescent pink)

October's pink is soft and romantic. Our pink strawberry earrings in Czech glass hit that sweet pink note.

November — Citrine / Topaz (golden yellow)

November's golden yellow is warm and cheerful. Our yellow grape earrings in Czech glass beads are a sunny, dimensional take on citrine's color.

December — Turquoise (blue-green)

December's turquoise is a specific blue-green that's hard to replicate. No current match — we'd rather say so than sell you the wrong color.

How to choose: color-first decision framework

When shopping by birthstone color (rather than by gemstone), ask three questions:

  1. Does the color read correctly at arm's length? Birthstone color is about instant recognition. Hold the piece at arm's length — if a stranger would say "that's purple" for February or "that's green" for May, it works.
  2. Is it the real material, honestly described? Czech glass beads are real glass, handmade, with genuine color depth. That's honest. What's not honest is calling glass an "amethyst" — we say "amethyst color" or "purple Czech glass," never just "amethyst."
  3. Will they actually wear it? The best birthstone-color piece is one that fits their existing wardrobe. Purple goes with everything; neon yellow-green is a commitment. When in doubt, choose the more wearable shade.

Czech glass beads vs. gemstones: an honest comparison

Let's be direct about what you're getting and what you're not:

  • Czech glass beads are handmade glass, produced in the Jablonec region of Czechia for generations. They have real color depth, light refraction, and artisanal character. They are not gemstones and don't pretend to be.
  • Gemstones (amethyst, garnet, peridot) are natural minerals with specific hardness, rarity, and price points. A real amethyst pendant starts around $50–$100; a real emerald is significantly more.
  • What glass does better: Color saturation at low prices, playful/dimensional shapes (like grape clusters), and worry-free daily wear — you're not stressed about losing a $500 stone.
  • What gemstones do better: Heirloom durability, resale value, and the specific satisfaction of owning a natural stone.

Neither is "better" — they're different purchases for different priorities. This guide is for when the priority is color, craft, and wearability.

Frequently asked questions

Are Czech glass beads the same as crystal?

No. "Crystal" in jewelry usually means lead glass with high light refraction (like Swarovski). Czech glass beads are soda-lime glass, handmade, known for color depth and variety rather than prismatic sparkle. Both are glass; they're different formulations for different effects.

Can I wear my birthstone color if I don't like the traditional stone?

Absolutely — that's the entire premise of this guide. The color is the meaningful part for most people. If you love purple but don't want to spend $200 on amethyst, purple Czech glass beads give you the color story in a handmade piece.

Do you have every birthstone month covered?

Not yet. We currently have strong matches for 8 of 12 months (January, February, April, May, June, July, August, October, November). March (aquamarine), September (sapphire), and December (turquoise) don't have current matches — we'd rather be honest about gaps than force a fit.

Is this good for gifting?

Birthstone-color jewelry is one of the most foolproof gifts — it's personal (their month), but you're not guessing their taste in the same way as picking a random style. Pair it with a note explaining the color connection.
